Sometimes, just sometimes, your HVAC unit is not the problem.  We’ve had plenty of calls where a residential or commercial client is complaining about their air conditioning or heating not working properly.  Since the communities we serve comprise of Beaumont, Corona, Riverside, San Bernardino, Fontana, Redlands, Loma Linda, Yucaipa, Ontario, and Temecula, it is entirely possible that desert dust has damaged the duct work.  Our technicians have seen it up close.  So instead of blaming your HVAC system, it may be a duct work failure that is the real culprit.  But how can you tell?  Here are a few telling signs from your trusted source of HVAC info, Design Air – Air Conditioning and Heating.

Aged Duct Work

Duct work that is 15 to 20 years old should be inspected by an HVAC professional.  Why?  As duct work ages it can collapse or have worn areas where flowing dust has created holes.  In either case, this could create your HVAC system to overcompensate and run longer than usual—causing so hefty heating and cooling bills.

Cold or Hot Spots

If you are finding that certain rooms in your home are significantly cooler or hotter, there is a high probability that there is a duct failure.  Either there is a hole that is seeping the temperature controlled air into the attic, or the duct collapse is preventing the air from arriving.

Bad Air Quality

Have you begun to notice that you or others in your family are suffering from more allergy symptoms?  Does the air continually smell less fresh than outdoors?  If so, your duct could be very filthy or have a hole that is allowing dirt to infiltration the HVAC system.
